Looking for a reason to hit the winter trail? Here's Two!!

1) Wildlife Feeding.

Winter is very hard on the animals and they could use our help.  With habitate disappearing, food options become more and more challenging. Need a cause? Help out our other brothers and sisters.

Omnivores: Pack along a bag of dried dog food and sprinkle large amounts far from traffic and family pets that may happen by.

Herbivores: Pack a long a mixed feed bag purchased at any grocery store.

2) Save a Tree.

Winter is a great time to CUT THE VINE that snakes up the tree and kills it. Cut the vine above ground. The vine lives and so does the tree. Loosen the curl as high up the tree as possible. (This vine is used for making Dream Catchers.)

NOTE:  Poison Ivy is active all year long. Vines that grow on trees contain off shoots that grasp the tree bark. Avoid this vine. It does not wrap around and choke the tree. Bittersweet is the vine to be cut. It literally looks like a snake, wrapping its way up the tree.

TOP 5 LIST

FIVE best Don'ts for Winter Hiking. We'll put your recommendations here. Some examples:

1)  Don't go without a fully equipped fanny pack. water / Bic Lighter wrapped in duct tape / charged cell phone / knife / snacks / plastic garbage bags (double as rain poncho.) field first aid kit / wrap of Sinew (very strong - takes up little space.  Mini flashlight (preferred windup or magnetically charged. No batteries required.)

2)  Don't eat the snow. (Lowers body temp from the inside and can kill you.)

3)  Don't forget Long underwear. Denim/Cottons freeze and lower body temp.

4)  Don’t forget car keys.

5)  Don’t forget to tell someone or leave a note.
